Religious Background and the Labor Supply and Wages of Young Women

چکیده
We analyze the separate effects of childhood religious affiliation and participation on both the labor supply and wages of young adult women. The empirical results indicate that (i) frequency of religious participation as a child has a positive effect on the number of hours worked per year as an adult; (ii) among Protestants, women who were raised as Lutherans or Methodists work fewer hours per year than do women from the reference (Baptist) background; (iii) conditional on hours worked, neither frequency of religious participation nor religious affiliation when young affects hourly earnings as an adult. ∗Corresponding author. A look at the spatial variation in male and female agricultural wages in India throws up a seeming paradox: gender differentials are the largest in the southern regions of India that are otherwise favourable to women.
